The Vardaman Board of Aldermen lost its longest serving member last week with the passing of A.D. Wright Jr.
The 81-year-old Wright had served on the town board in two separate stints. This year concluded his 16th year on the board in the latest one. He also served as alderman from 1965-69.
“Mr. Wright loved this town,” Vardaman Mayor James Casey said. “He was a great example of public service. We’re going to really miss him.”
Wright died Sunday, Jan. 25,  at NMMC in Eupora. He was born Feb. 19, 1927 in Banner, the son of A.D. Wright Sr. and Sara Estelle Shepard Wright.
He was a member and deacon of Vardaman First Baptist Church and was retired from Caviness Woodworking in Calhoun City after over 25 years of service. He was a WWII Army Veteran and a member of the Sweet Potato Festival Committee.
Funeral services were Tuesday at Vardaman First Baptist Church. Burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery in Vardaman.
Due to the closeness of the next municipal election, Wright’s position on the board will be left vacant until after the election.
