Unemployment Rate Down In February

Calhoun County unemployment decreased in February and remains virtually
equal to most of the surrounding counties, according to the Mississippi
Department of Employment Security.

Calhoun County unemployment decreased in February and remains virtually equal to most of the surrounding counties, according to the Mississippi Department of Employment Security.
Calhoun’s unemployment rate in February was 11.5%, down from 12.1% in January. February’s rate is still much higher than it was in February 2008, 8%.
February’s rate was in line with the surrounding counties – Webster 12.6, Chickasaw 14.2, Pontotoc 10.4, Yalobusha 13, Grenada 11.4, and Lafayette 6.3.
Lafayette’s rate was among the lowest in the state with Rankin and Lamar. The highest rate is in Holmes County at 20%.
Calhoun’s unemployment has steadily risen from 2004 when it was 6.3%. It climbed from 6.3% to 8% last February, before jumping to double-digits over the past 12 months. The county has averaged an unemployment rate of 10.2% since last February.
This year’s 11.5% rate is the 51st highest among the 82 counties in the state.
