L.W. “Chick” Collins

Leslie Wayne Collins, known as “Chick” to his family and friends, passed away on Saturday, December 28, 2013 at the age of 89.  He was born in Calhoun County, January 4, 1924 to the late Jesse Leland and Jettie Valeria Kimsey Collins. He is the beloved father of Ava Jo Collins of New Orleans, LA and Dr. Steven Wayne Collins of Slidell, LA.  He was preceded in death by his wife of more than 40 years, Geraldine Collins and all of his brothers and sisters. Calhoun City will play Bassfield Friday, Dec. 6 at 3 p.m. in Mississippi Veterans’ Memorial Stadium in Jackson for the Class 2A State Championship after defeating Baldwyn 31-0 last Friday night in the North Half Title game.

Syble Massey Brasher

Syble Massey Brasher, 89, of Bruce, died August 18, 2013 at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North MS in Oxford. She was born July 6, 1924 in Merigold, the daughter of Truman Zack and Alpha Card Massey. She was a homemaker, member of Bruce First Baptist Church, and was a 1938 graduate of Bruce High School. She attended Jackson Commercial College.

Supervisors hear budget proposals; new software could lessen amount of license plates renewed

Calhoun County supervisors began work on the budget for next fiscal year by hearing requests from each of the county departments last Friday.
