Three new restaurants, one in Bruce and two in Calhoun City, are preparing to open their doors to customers in the next few weeks. Kishan Patel, owner of the Subway sandwich shop going in Bruce on Hwy. 32 just east of Hwy. 9, said he plans to open in the next two weeks.

“The second week of November is our target date,” Patel said. “We’ve really completed the majority of work on the building. All we have to do is start setting up all the equipment, which usually takes two to three days.”
Patel said they expect to employ up to 20 people in the store and will begin taking applications in the next week.
patel_subway“We will set up a sign outside inviting people to come by and fill out an application,” Patel said.
The renovation of the building has gone “very smooth,” Patel said. The only hang-up has been the large hole at the end of his driveway. The hole is where a large culvert runs under the highway. It is on the Mississippi Department of Transportation’s right-of-way and they are the only ones who can correct the issue.
“We’ve worked with the city to try and get something done with MDOT,” Patel said. “Alderman Parsons has been very helpful in assisting us. Unfortunately, we haven’t had much response from MDOT at this point.”
Patel said until something is done, he will put up some kind of temporary barrier to alert his customers of the large hole.
Calhoun City has two new restaurants in the works, both Mexican.
Mark Goodson, at Mark’s One-Stop, is putting in a Mexican restaurant and steak house in his store. Previous owner Buck Langford operated a steak house in the facility before.
“We have the facility with the full kitchen already in place,” Goodson said. “It only made sense to try and make use of it.”
Goodson is planning to open in approximately two weeks. He is still awaiting some cooking equipment that has been ordered.
His initial plans are to open the restaurant from 5-9 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.
“We’re going to see how it goes at first and then we may expand those hours,” Goodson said. He said he settled on offering Mexican food and steaks to provide a variety. “Those seem to be the preferred choices of a lot of the people we talked to, and I know my family loves both,” Goodson said.
Goodson already has his cooks and staff lined up for the most part. He said the restaurant would simply be called “Mark’s” to stay in line with the store.
Another Mexican restaurant is planned on the Calhoun City Square. Los Encinos Mexican Restaurant will be going in the old Factory Connection building on the west side of the square.
The owners operate a Mexican restaurant in Webster County. The Calhoun City restaurant isn’t expected to be open until later in December as a lot of kitchen renovation remains to be done to the building. No further details were available.
