This week’s high school football polls

By AUSTIN BISHOP and BOBBY GRAY
West Jones tightened it’s grip on the top spot in the MHSAA Class 5A rankings produced by the Mississippi Prep Sports Source with a convincing 40-14 win over then No. 3 Wayne County on Friday night.

Picayune remained at No. 2 in the 5A rankings, while West Point and Ridgeland climbed up one spot to No. 3 and 4 respectively and Wayne County came in at No. 5
South Panola, Meridian and Madison Central remain at the top of the Class 6A rankings, with Petal jumping up three spots to No. 4 with a 31-21 victory over previously undefeated Gulfport, which slipped one spot to No. 5.
Forrest County made big ground in Class 4A, jumping six spots to No. 6 behind its 28-21 win over previously undefeated Purvis, which was No. 2 last week. Lafayette County holds the top spot, while New Albany is now No. 2 and Noxubee County, North Pike and St. Stanislaus each moved up one spot to Nos. 3, 4, and 5. Purvis fell to No. 7.
There were no changes in the top seven spots in Class 3A, with Forest leading the way, followed by Charleston, Philadelphia, Aberdeen, Tylertown, Belmont and Cleveland East Side.
The top eight remain the same in Class 2A. Taylorsville, which was idle last week, remains on top of the rankings, with Calhoun City, East Webster, Lumberton and Wesson rounding out the top five.
The Class 1A rankings also saw no movement among the top eight teams. The 10-0 Durant Tigers are tops in 1A, with Nanih Waiya second and Natchez Cathedral third. Okolona and Mount Olive wrap up the top five.
While there were some big games in the MAIS last week, they really didn’t affect this week’s rankings much. Jackson Prep, Jackson Academy Trinity Episcopal, Presbyterian Christian and Pillow Academy make up the top five, just as they did last week.
