Sheriff warns of phone scam in the area

The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Department is warning citizens of a phone scam discovered in the area.

Sheriff Greg Pollan said several Calhoun County residences have reported receiving phone calls from a 1-876-463-7993 number traced back to Jamaica that is telling people they are Publisher’s Clearing House Sweepstakes winners.

Pollan said the caller asks for money to be wired via Western Union  to a specific address and then sweepstakes winners will show up at your home to present your winnings.

“This is a scam,” Pollan said. “Publisher’s Clearing House will never call you if you win from them and you do not have to give them money.”

Pollan said his department has received more than 30 calls about this scam in the past three days,
