Itawamba Community College’s new head football coach, Jon Williams, has dipped into Terry Bowden’s coaching staff at the UnknownUniversity of North Alabama for his new defensive coordinator.  Calhoun City native Sean Cannon, who has 13 years of collegiate coaching experience, heads to ICC after four years of coaching the linebackers and serving as strength and conditioning coach at UNA.
“We’re so excited to have Sean on board with us at ICC,” said Williams, who took over the Indians program for the resigning Jeff Terrill on December 15.  “This is a guy who has a ton of college coaching experience including coaching the defensive linemen on Delta State’s national championship team back in 2000.”
Cannon, who was a standout defensive tackle at DSU, coached at his alma mater from 1997 through the 2004 season.  The final two years, he served as the defensive coordinator for the Statesmen.
“ICC has such a great reputation and I’m glad to finally be a part of this family,” said Cannon, who has coached his share of NCAA Division II All-Americans and all Gulf-South performers in his 12 years of coaching in what most of the so-called experts call the premier NCAA Division II football conference in the country.  “We want to make sure our players buy into our system and that includes getting it done in the classroom and on the field.  We want our players to show respect and part of that philosophy is we tell them to open a door for a women at least two times a day.”
Cannon added, “our short term goals are signing a good recruiting class and having a great spring practice.  It’s all a part of an equation to be successful and we want our players here at Itawamba to be committed to being a champion.”
