A shooting at a Vardaman home Sunday afternoon that left a man dead looks like self-defense, according to Sheriff Billy Mac Gore.
Jonathan L. Tutor, 41, of Pontotoc, was pronounced dead at the scene at the home of Jimmie Putt, 166 CR 115, Vardaman, which is about five miles north of Vardaman just above the Ellzey community.
Sheriff Gore said that Putt, 63, had recently been released from the hospital where he had open heart surgery.
Gore said Putt’s sister, Teresa Abbott, of Pontotoc, and her boyfriend, Tutor, had been coming down to check on him.
He said they were visiting Putt Sunday afternoon, and they were about to leave the home, when Abbott went out to warm the car.
Gore said that Putt said Tutor then attacked him with a claw hammer hitting him in the chest where he had surgery.
According to Gore, Putt said that they scuffled and Tutor grabbed a pistol that was nearby and squeezed the trigger a couple of times, but there was not a bullet in the chamber. Putt then grabbed another, a 32 Ruger, from a holster hanging on the wall.
Gore said Putt said he fired a warning shot and then shot Tutor twice– one bullet just grazed him and the other went into his side through his lungs.
Abbott heard the shots and came back in where she called 911 at 5:14 p.m.
Putt was transported by ambulance to Trace Regional at Houston where he was released later that night.
Gore said they are awaiting reports from the autopsy, but believe the shooting was self-defense.
“However, we are not ruling anything out. The case is still under investigation,” Gore said.
