M.D. Jennings (Calhoun City, Miss.), a senior safety on the Arkansas State football team, was named the Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Monday following his strong showing in the Red Wolves’ season opener at No. 22 Auburn last Saturday.
Jennings led Arkansas State’s defense against the Tigers, recording a team-high 11 tackles that included a career-best 1.5 tackles for loss.
Jennings, who recorded ASU’s only sack of Tiger quarterback Cam Newton, was also responsible for forcing one fumble and recovering another.
The Calhoun City, Miss. native posted double-figure tackles in a game for the fourth time of his career and his 11 stops were just two short of his career-high 13. Jennings’ sack was the third of his career and he now has two career forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries. His career-best 1.5 stops behind the line gives him 5.5 tackles for loss for his career.
