The Calhoun City Wildcats defeated the Ray Brooks Tigers 20-12 Friday night to advance to the Class 1A State Championship Game in Jackson.
“I can’t say enough for these kids,” Calhoun City Coach Mike Ray said. “I’m very proud of them.”
After a scoreless first half, the rain picked up and so did the scoring. The Wildcats struck first when freshman defensive lineman Marcquez Jones picked off a lateral in the backfield and raced 66 yards to the Tiger 6-yard-line. After an offsides call on the Tigers, Jarvis Rounds punched in the first of his three touchdowns to put the Wildcats up 6-0. A bad snap on the extra point thwarted that attempt.
The Wildcats appeared to be on their way to putting the game away with a fourth quarter touchdown drive, when Brooks’ Devarcus Ireland scooped up a fumbled snap and outran everyone 95 yards for a touchdown to tie the game at six. The Wildcat defense stuffed the two-point conversion to keep the game even.
The Wildcats took the ensuing kickoff and marched 45 yards for a touchdown to reclaim the lead. Rounds put it in the end zone with an 18-yard run with 8:04 left in the game. The Wildcats went for two but failed.
Runs of 23 and 29 yards by Ireland brought the Tigers right back into scoring position at the Wildcat 10-yard line. From there it was Devoris Hunt carrying it in for the game-tying touchdown with just over five minutes to play. The Wildcats again stuffed the two-point try to keep the score 12-12.
Demarius Howard returned the Brooks’ kickoff 43 yards to the Tiger 37-yard line where the ‘City offense began its game-winning march.
Rounds, who finished with 122 yards on 27 rushes, carried the load accounting for nine plays and 32 yards. The game-clincher came with 30 seconds on the clock from two yards out when Rounds powered off left guard diving across the goal line.
Rounds punched in the 2-point conversion for good measure and a 20-12 lead.
Brooks could do nothing with the final 25 seconds as the Wildcats earned a return trip to Jackson to face Puckett at 2:30 p.m. Friday for the Class 1A championship.
“This is my second time to go down there and this time we’re bringing a ring back,” Rounds said. “We have a good offensive line and a good team. We’re young, but our young boys stepped up, matured through the season. We’re ready to go after that ring.”
