Alvin T. Simmons, a native of Alabama and a resident of Mobile, died Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010. He was born January 5, 1922 in Monroeville, Al. He received his B.S. degree from Livingston State College in 1953, and a Masters degree from University of Alabama in 1971. He taught physics and chemistry in the Mobile County School system for 31 years. After retiring in 1984, he taught 10 years at Mobile Christian School. He served in WWII?in the Pacific. He was an active member of Regency Church of Christ and volunteer treasurer for 40 years.

Frank S.?Powell, 88, of Houlka, died Sunday, Jan. 31, 2010, at BMH-NM  in Oxford. He was born November 21, 1921 in Sarepta, the son of James Eli and Emily Virginia Stubblefield Powell. He was a retired mail carrier for 34 years. He was a graduate of Sarepta High School, and the University of Mississippi in 1950 with a B.S. degree. He was a Mason with Houlka Lodge; Scottish Rite Shriner, member of Houlka Lions’ Club, V.F.W., American Legion, Colonel Governor and was State DAV Commander. He was on the staff of John Bell Williams, was a former member of Houlka School Board where he served as president, and a member of Houlka Baptist Church, where he was a deacon and Sunday School teacher. He was a WWII?U.S. Army Veteran and Purple Heart recipient.

Oliver Derwood Armstrong, 77, died Friday, January 29, 2010 at Calhoun Health Services nursing home. He was born March 4, 1932 in Calhoun County, the son of L.R. and Mille Patterson. He was a retired mechanic with Blue Ribbon Tire and Maintenance.

Thomas G. Smith, Sr., 89, of Banner,  died January 27, 2010 at Baptist Memorial–NM Hospital in Oxford. He was born August 9, 1920 in Banner to Leslie Amos Burton Smith and Bera Wilson Smith. He grew up in Banner and graduated as valedictorian from Bruce High School in 1938. He was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II. He worked in the timber industry for many years, starting out as a sawmill employee, truck driver, then as yard foreman for E.L. Bruce Company and retired as a security guard for Memphis Hardwood Flooring. Throughout the years, he enjoyed working on his farm and managing cattle as long as health permitted. He was a member of Banner Baptist Church, where he was privileged to serve as deacon for many years.

He was born November 25, 1927 in Water Valley, the son of Wiley and Lula Cook?Crutchfield Carter. He was a retired farmer, served in the U.S. Army, and  longtime member and deacon of Lantrip Baptist Church.

Sarah F. Britt, 75, of Pontotoc died Friday, Jan. 22, 2010, at Community Hospice House Darlington Oaks in Verona. She was born Sept. 22, 1934, to Walter Flaherty and Pauline Aycock Flaherty. She was a resident of Pontotoc County and formerly of Bruce. She was a homemaker and a member of Pontotoc Church of Christ.

He was a retired pipe fitter #190, WWII USA  Army Veteran, and was a member of First Baptist Church in Olive Branch.

Funeral services were Saturday, January 30, 2010 11:30 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Glendale for Syble Gray Sturdivant Gilder, 76, of Littleton, Co., who died January 20 at Littleton Adventist Hospital. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

She was born March 17, 1923 in Memphis, the daughter of Ed and Minnie Haire Vanlandingham. She had worked in retail sales, she was a member of St. Luke Catholic Church in Bruce.

Willie Freelon departed this life on January 25, 2010 in his home in Pittsboro. He was born June 19, 1928 in Yalobusha County, the son of Charlie Freelon and Emma Jenkins. He was a member of Bryant Chapel M.B. Church in Big Creek, where he remained faithful until his health failed him.
