OXFORD, Miss. (AP) - The city of Oxford's request for a one-time exception for on-premise Sunday alcohol sales for Valentine's Day has been denied by the Mississippi State Tax Commission. Mayor Pat Patterson tells the Oxford Eagle that the commission gave no reason for its decision, which was faxed to the city on Tuesday. The city had asked that Sunday alcohol sales at restaurants be allowed on Feb. 14 from noon to 9 p.m. The Tax Commission, through the Office of Alcoholic Beverage Control, regulates the sale of liquor. City officials say on-premise sales have been allowed for other special Sunday events, such as New Year's Eve and, less than four years ago, when Ole Miss had a special Sunday football game during Labor Day weekend. |
