| Cougar Junior High Teams Earn Division Titles |

By JOEL McNEECE Calhoun Academy junior high basketball has enjoyed one of its greatest seasons in a very long time. Both the girls’ and boys’ teams ran away with the regular season district title and head into next week’s district tournament at Winona as the number one seed.“It’s been a great year,” said Headmaster Sonny Wright, who coaches the girls’ team. “We’re very proud of all of our kids.” His girls finished the regular season 16-4. The boys are 16-1 and unbeaten in the division. “This is the first time the boys have won a title in 27 years,” Coach Forrest Daws said. Both teams wrapped up the regular season last week with a pair of wins over Hebron and Kemper. The girls topped Hebron 27-16. Anber Flemons led with nine points. Anna Grace Turner scored seven. They followed that with a 35-7 win against Kemper. Turner led all scorers with 18 points. Miranda McCormick scored six. The boys’ games were even more lopsided. They defeated Hebron 42-19. Taylor Shoemake led the way with 22 points, followed by Warner Jones with six and Cameron Bryant five.The Cougars defeated Kemper 42-13. Hunter Harmon led with 13 points. Shoemake added 10 and Danny Joe Norman seven. The high school Lady Cougars lost both their games. Hebron defeated CA 46-28 with Kelci McCormick scoring 13 and Ali Norman six. Kemper defeated the Lady Cougars 43-35. McCormick again led with 17 points. Laken Langston added seven. |
