The safety achievements by associates of Weyerhaeuser Company’s Bruce Lumber Technologies facility have reached a key highpoint. The 191 associates at the Weyerhaeuser Bruce facility, which produces 210 million board feet a year, logged over 1.5mm hours of work between 2007 and 2009 with no lost time injuries and a recordable incident rate of .39. For the last seven years Bruce has operated with a recordable incident rate of less than 1. In recognition of this milestone, Weyerhaeuser Company awarded the associates at the Bruce facility with the highest safety honor the company offers, the Senior Management Team (SMT) Safety Gold Award. The mill will proudly display two items provided to recognize this award: a Waterford crystal trophy and a gold flag. This Gold Award is the latest in a string of safety recognition for these associates. The SMT Safety Excellence Award was awarded in 2003 when the Bruce associates worked one million labor hours without a lost time accident. The SMT Safety Excellence Award was awarded in 2004 for working two million labor hours without a lost time accident. A recordable incident is an at-work injury serious enough to require a doctor’s care and to be considered a recordable incident by the standards of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA); a lost-time accident is an at-work injury serious enough for the employee to miss work.“This is a tremendous accomplishment for the Bruce mill to achieve the highest safety recognition provided by Weyerhaeuser Company, the SMT Safety Gold Award,” said Jerry Nix, Area Manager for the Lumber Technologies operations and formerly Unit Manager for the Bruce mill. “This is a direct result of each associate striving daily for continuous safety improvement. I am very proud of each associate and the entire team.” Weyerhaeuser Company has about 1,070 associates in Mississippi and manages over 750,000 acres of timberlands in the state, all certified to the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI)™.
