Calhoun City Board of Aldermen declared a state of emergency to repair the city water well next to the Vo-Tech Center at their regular meeting last night.
Mayor J.R. Denton told the board that the pump had quit working after 15 years.
"If anything should happen to the well in the industrial park, we will be in a lot of trouble," he said.
Declaring a state of emergency allows the board to get quotes and start the paperwork immediately for an emergency loan. They will apply for funding at 1.95%  through the Mississippi State Department of Heath Bureau of Public Water Safety.
Denton asked for approval to apply for funding from the Revolving Loan Fund for long term rehabilitation on the water tank in the industrial park and the board approved.
They discussed routine maintenance of the former Kellwood Outlet Store building now owned by the city.
Denton said the building needs painting outside and windows need to be re-placed. The building is now being used by the VFW. The board agreed to seek quotes for materials and ask the VFW if they will provide the labor. Denton emphasized that the building is not in a state of disrepair.
Denton told the board that Alderman Marshall Coleman, who is away on military duty, had contacted him and said his unit will be deployed to Afghanistan on August 3, 2010 after training at Camp Shelby and Fort Hood, Tx.
Approval was given for payments to Franks Construction for $42,636.33 and to Willis Engineering for $3,030 for the sewage lagoon. Funding is provided by a community development block grant.
Denton announced the holiday closings:
Veterans Day–Nov. 9 (Monday instead of actual day on Wednesday);
Thanksgiving–Nov. 26-27;
Christmas–Dec. 24-25;
New Year’s–Dec. 31 and Jan. 1.
In other action they:
•appointed Brenda Jenning to the city library board to a five-year term replacing Mary Lynn Perkins;
•approved advertising for the sale of a 1997 police car;
•approved the mayor, department heads and two aldermen to purchase from surplus property;
•approved Deputy Clerk Raenell Moore attending a 2009 certification program update.
The board went into executive session to discuss a continuing issue of possible litigation on property cleanup.
