| Calhoun's Unemployment Rate Shows Improvement |

By JOEL McNEECE Calhoun County recorded its lowest unemployment rate in nearly a year in September, according to the Mississippi Department of Employment Security. Calhoun County's unemployment rate in September was 9.7%. That was down from 11.2% in August. The September rate was the 35th lowest in the state, Calhoun's best ranking among the 82 counties in more than a year. Compared to surrounding counties, only Lafayette (6.9) and Pontotoc (8.7) were lower. Chickasaw reported a jobless rate of 13.2%, followed by Webster 13.5%, Grenada 11% and Yalobusha 12.9%. The overall rate for the state in September was 8.8%. The national unemployment rate for the month was 9.5%. The lowest rates in Mississippi were Rankin 5.6, Scott 5.9, Madison 6.3, Lamar 6.6, and Lafayette 6.9. The highest rates in Mississippi were Clay 17.8, Noxubee 17.6, Holmes 16.6, Jefferson 15.5, and Winston 15.1. |
