By JOEL McNEECE The Calhoun City Chamber announced plans for several upcoming community events and listened to a presentation by Norman Griffin, who is putting in a solar power business in the old Kellwood store building. Griffin, who said he is getting closer to opening his business that will offer solar installation for individual homes, outlined why solar power is so advantageous. Griffin predicted that utility rates will continue to climb in the coming years as the demand for power grows and supplies lessen. Griffin said the price of solar panels is as low as they’ve ever been and a “split-system” can be installed to allow a home to operate off solar and then put power back into the line and get paid for it. Griffin encouraged everyone to look at U.S. House bill 2454 and its impact on American energy. Chamber President Barbara Fox said Griffin would be invited back after his business began operation. Scott Wright presented the Green Committee report on recycling. He said all of the Calhoun City schools are now recycling paper. He said the recycling trailers are being well used in Pittsboro and Calhoun City and they are working to get trailers for Bruce and Vardaman. Todd Cospelich said the New Century Club will be hosting this year’s Octoberfest Thursday, Oct. 22 on the square. The event will feature pumpkin carving and costume contests as well as many fun booths for kids. Other future events include Christmas Open House Nov. 7-8, Veterans Day program Nov. 11, ‘City Sidewalk Celebration Nov. 19, and Christmas Parade Dec. 7. |
