Journal Co-Founder Maggie Denley Dies PDF Print E-mail
Maggie Ellen Denley, co-founder of The Calhoun County Journal, died Wednesday afternoon at Bruce Community Living Center. Denley, 97, founded The Journal in August 1953 with her husband Sellers Denley and son S. Gale Denley when they moved from Coffeeville to Bruce.

maggie_ellen_denleyShe was born Jan. 19, 1912, to Raymond Carver Simpson and Lucy Brewer Simpson in Coffeeville. She was a member of Bruce First Baptist Church and a former Sunday School teacher in the children’s department. She was a past member of the Bruce Fine Arts Club. She worked at The Journal until retirement.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Leora Simpson; her husband, Sellers Vanhooser Denley; and a son, S. Gale Denley.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Parker Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Daniel Hathorne officiating. Burial will be in the Coffeeville Cemetery.
Survivors include three grandchildren, Celia Denley Hillhouse (Lanny) and Lisa Denley McNeece (Joel), all of Bruce, and Deanna Denley Adams of Tupelo; seven great-grandchildren, Colby Hillhouse (Amanda) of Bruce, Jo Ellen Bailey of Saltillo, Abby Rea (Sam) of Bruce, Marshall Bailey (Whitney) of Bruce; Zachary Adams, Samantha Adams and Eli Adams of Tupelo; two great-great-grandchildren, Addi Claire Bailey and Jackson Hillhouse, both of Bruce; a daughter-in-law, JoAnn Denley of Bruce.
Pallbearers will be Tim Denley, Tommy Hallum, Robert Edward Oakley, Dr. Bruce Longest, Don Newlin, Terry Martin, Robert Lee Logan and Dr. Mike Young.
Visitation will be from noon to service time Friday at the funeral home.
