Feb. 8, 2001 – Jo Ann said she could smell the gunpowder in the back yard the next morning after. That was to be expected for at least a dozen shots had been fired in frustration, if not in anger. It was not for nothing. The armadillo was dead.

Dec. 30, 1999 – We may very well have lost our best all around politician of the second half of the 20th century with the death of Jim Buck Ross earlier this month. The long time commissioner of agriculture, unlike many other politicians of the era, didn’t traffic in race or other negative issues bantered around in the 1950s and -60s. It wasn’t his style. He was a fun-loving, people- loving fellow from Pelahatchie, who never forgot who he was, where he came from, or who sent him.

Nov. 16, 2006 – The good news is that we made it through two weddings on the first Saturday in November. The better news is that it was a very enjoyable time. On the Wednesday night before, it was a somber time as we drove to Water Valley to mourn with the Williams family the death of Harold’s wife, Mary Lou. We have known the Williams and their kin for several decades and consider them family.
