By JOEL McNEECE A Sunday afternoon house fire between Derma and Vardaman resulted in authorities discovering 56 marijuana plants, resulting in four arrests.
Celio Martinez Olgin, 55; Jesus Zanudo, 52; Roberto Contreras Reyes, 20; and Jose Martinez, 45; are all being held in the Calhoun County Jail on possession and manufacture of a controlled substance. Sheriff Greg Pollan said ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) put a “hold” on the four men to inspect their legal status. Pollan said the Vardaman Fire Department responded to a house fire at 15 CR 426 Sunday around noon. The fire was suspected to have started from a hot water heater, Pollan said. He said firemen contacted the sheriff’s department when they saw the men living in the house behaving suspiciously. “They said three four men were moving a large tub filled with the red plastic cups out of the back of the house and covered it with a blanket,” Pollan said. “They didn’t try and save anything else from the home.” Deputy Kenneth White was first on scene and called Pollan for backup. Olgin, Zanudo, and Reyes were arrested at the scene without incident, Pollan said. “They told us how to find Martinez, who was staying on the Choctaw Reservation in Philadelphia,” Pollan said. He drove to Neshoba County and arrested Martinez later that evening. Pollan said the case is still under investigation.
