Calhoun Academy Headmaster Sonny Wright will serve as head coach of the Cougar football team this season after the surprise resignation of Jeff Dalton.
Wright, who will become the third head coach for the Cougars in the past three years, said Dalton called last week and informed him he “wasn’t the man for the job.” Dalton told Wright he wanted to coach basketball and would be searching for a job closer to Oxford.
Dalton went winless last year in his only season as head coach of the Cougars.
Wright, who has 20 years experience of coaching football, said he met with the team last week.
“I thought the kids responded very well to the news,” Wright said.
Wright last coached in 2001 at Rossville Christian near Collierville, Tenn. He previously coached at Kirk Academy, Greenville Christian and Parkview Baptist in Louisiana.
Wright said the biggest obstacle moving forward this year will be teaching the players a new terminology in such a short time.
“It’s going to be a challenge because my terminology is totally different from what they know now,” Wright said.
The official start of fall practice is next Monday, July 26. The Cougars open the season Aug. 20 at Park Place Academy.
