Fred L. Mathis, 64, formerly of Pontotoc, died Thursday, Feb. 27, 2014, at Noland Hospital in Tuscaloosa, Al., after an extended illness. He was born Dec. 15, 1949, in Pontotoc County to the Rev. JC and Louise Munlin Mathis. He was a U.S. Army veteran, drafted from April 1969 to April 1971 and served as Specialist 5th Class. After medical training at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, he was stationed at Landstuhl Army Medical Center in Landstuhl, Germany. He worked in credit and commission sales for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in Dallas after military service. He began a career in finance management in 1973 and was a district supervisor for Pioneer Credit in North Mississippi until his death. Mr. Mathis was a talented electric guitarist, an avid gun collector and a member of the Nettleton United Pentecostal Church.Funeral service was at 2 p.m., March 2, at the Nettleton United Pentecostal Church with the Rev. Larry Davis, the Rev. Larry Hill and the Rev. Jordan Davis officiating. Burial was in the Jones Chapel Cemetery. Tisdale-Lann Memorial Funeral Home of Nettleton was in charge of arrangements.Survivors include his wife, Joyce Harlow Mathis of Nettleton; his mother, Louise Munlin Mathis of Pontotoc; one daughter, Dawn Marie Mathis Jeter (Rev. Clift Jeter) of New Albany; two grandchildren, Alana Rose Jeter, and JC Alexander Clifton Jeter of New Albany. He was preceded in death by his father, the Rev.
