The Excel, Inc. advisory board in Calhoun City approved submitting an application for a 21st Century Community Learning Center Grant for the 2103-2014 academic year.
The grant would support the hiring of two additional part-time tutors to increase the number of children being served, helping students meet local, state and national standards in subjects like reading and math, said Excel Director Sister Judy Sinnwell.
There is increased urgency for the resources Excel provides in light of the more demanding standards of the Core Curriculum, which the district adopted, and the 3rd Gate legislation signed into Mississippi law in April. Upgrades in computers and textbooks are also included in the application.
Communication and collaboration with the Calhoun County School District on this issue and others is on-going. This factor, along with being in a geographic area where 21st Century Grants have been “under-represented,” hopefully provides Excel’s application with criteria points in the selection process.
