The Calhoun City Wildcats won the Region 4-2A title with a dramatic 26-25 victory at Okolona Friday night.
The Wildcats scored on a 46-yard pass from Chakel Gates to Travone Petty with just over one minute to play in the game.
The pass was deflected by an Okolona defender and dropped right in the hands of Petty, who had slipped behind the Chieftain defense. He raced untouched down the sideline for the game winning score.
The win completes an unbeaten season in region play for the Wildcats. They will open the playoffs next week at home against a team yet to be determined.
The loss for Okolona dropped them to the fourth seed in the region, forcing them on the road next week at West Bolivar to open the playoffs.
Bruce had the night off after completing their regular season last week. They will open the playoffs on the road at Hollandale-Simmons next Friday. Simmons defeated South Delta 28-6 Friday night.
South Delta will travel to Eupora next week in another playoff game. Eupora earned the second seed in Region 4-2A with a 35-18 win at East Webster.
In other Calhoun County action, the Calhoun Academy Cougars were defeated by Hebron 20-14 to end the Cougars’ season.
Vardaman was off this week. They will host Falkner next Friday in the regular season finale.
