Mary Otye Vance Hitt, 89, Kossuth, died Sunday, Sept. 7, 2014 at her home in Kossuth.  She was born May 3, 1925 to Robert Carl Vance and Margaret Eunice Spencer Vance  in Calhoun County. She grew up in Slate Springs area and joined Spring Hill Baptist Church at an early age. She graduated from Slate Springs High School and attended Mississippi College in Clinton and taught at Slate Springs School. She loved gardening, flowers, birds and music. Tina Miller-Simmons

Ernestine (Tina) B. Miller-Simmons, of Alexandria, VA, died August 14, 2014 after suffering a fall and several years of declining health.  Born on September 17, 1929, in Calhoun City, to Blandina and Ernest Bounds, Tina served in the U.S. Air Force as an Airman 1st Class. She married Ronald “Tiny” D. Miller (USAF retired) who died 1978. The Air Force took Tina and Tiny to Germany and a host of other locations before they eventually settled in Alexandria, VA. Roger W. Webb Sr., 67, of Bruce, died September 6, 2014 at Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo. He was born January 10, 1947, the son of Thomas and Maxine Webb. He pastored Schoona Valley Baptist Church for 25 years, and also Drivers Flat Baptist Church. Gertrude Elizabeth Johnson Byars, 99, died Saturday, Aug. 30, 2014 at her home in Paris.  She was born February 11, 1915 in Water Valley, to the late Lawrence and Gertie Mae Summers Johnson. She was of the Baptist faith and was fondly known as “Sister”. She enjoyed quilting, sewing, making dolls and stuffed animals, and working puzzles. From age 93 to 95 she worked alongside her daughter, Lottie at Harmon’s Restaurant.
