J. Fred Burke

J. Fred Burke, 98, died Monday, February 2, 2015 at Golden Age Nursing Home of Alzheimer’s Disease. He was born on January 5, 1917 in Calhoun County, MS to the late William and Mae Seale Burke. He was a charter member of North Greenwood Baptist Church, where he was a deacon and taught the 10 year old boys’ Sunday School Class for many years. He attended Delta State and taught school before serving in World War II. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and received the Bronze Star. He and his wife Mary Alice moved to Greenwood after the war and he was retired District Manager for United Insurance Company.  He was a longstanding member and President of the Greenwood Lions Club. Gladys Boggus Cantrell , 90, of Water Valley died Tuesday, February 3, 2015 at Baptist Memorial Hospital – NMS  in Oxford.  She was born May 29, 1924 in Calhoun County, MS to Garlin Boggus & Arvilla Cleveland Boggus.  She was a retired seamstress for Kellwood & a member of O’Tuckolofa Baptist Church.
Visitation will be Thursday, February 5, 2015 from 12:00 pm until 2:00 pm at Pryor Funeral Home in Calhoun City, MS. The funeral service will be Thursday, February 5, 2015 at 2:00 pm at Pryor Funeral Home Chapel in Calhoun City, MS with Bro. Dan Dickerson officiating.  Burial will be Pinecrest Memorial Gardens in Calhoun City. Pryor Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Pallbearers are Adam Langham, David Cantrell, Casey Ward, Davin Ward, Chris Ward, & Don Ward.
She is survived by daughter, Carolyn (Terry) Anthony, Water Valley; son, Fred W. (Fredda) Cantrell, Tupelo; five grandchildren, Derek (Alice) Smith, Madison, AL; Michelle (Cayce) Washington, Water Valley; Desha (Brad) Ferguson, Water Valley; David Cantrell, Tupelo; & Kelly (Chris) Clark, Tupelo; seven great-grandchildren, Chase, Brent, & Staci Smith; Mallory & Carlye Washington; Peyton & Braxton Ferguson;  two sisters, Irma (Don) Ward, Big Creek; Peggy Dunlap, Metheun, MA;  special friend since childhood, Clemmie Brown.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Cantrell, parents & two sisters, Dorris Ann Boggus; & Ruth McNair

Funeral services for Wendell Smith will be Friday, Feb. 6 at 11 a.m. at Van Hoose and Steele Fneral Home, 2615 Stillman Blvd., Tuscaloosa, AL. Visitation will be Thursday from noon until 6 p.m. Burial will be at Montevallo National Military Cemetery. A full obituary will be printed at a later date. A 1976 graduate of Bruce High School, he was married to the former Annie Kay Bean, also of Bruce.
