Calhoun records its lowest unemployment rate in 15 years

Calhoun County recorded its lowest unemployment rate in nearly 15 years in April, according to the Mississippi Department of Employment Security.
Calhoun County’s April jobless rate was 5.5%. The 27th lowest among Mississippi’s 82 counties and the lowest for the county since 4.7% recorded in December of 2000.

unemployment1It was the fourth consecutive month the county’s unemployment rate has decreased since posting an 8.5% mark in January.
It registered just below the state mark of 5.7% and just above the national unemployment rate for the month of 5.1%.
Calhoun’s surrounding counties were also among the state’s lowest, led by Lafayette at 4.2%, the sixth lowest in Mississippi. Grenada and Pontotoc both registered at 5.2%, Webster at 6.1%, Yalobusha at 6.2% and Chickasaw at 7.4%.

Rankin and Madison counties were the lowest in the state at 3.4% and 3.8%. Desoto was the lowest in North Mississippi at 4%.
Issaquena and Jefferson recorded the highest two rates at 16.3% and 12.7%. The highest rate in Northeast Mississippi were Noxubee and Clay counties at 9.4%.
