Calhoun County Fair will begin Monday with Fairest of Fair pageant

The 90th edition of the Calhoun County Fair will be held July 15-20 with a few new additions.

The Fair will open Monday, July 15 with the annual Fairest of the Fair pageant at 6:30 p.m. Entry fees are $15 for beauty, $10 for photogenic.

Dixie Riders and Youth Speed events will take place on Tuesday, July 16 in the rodeo arena.

Wednesday, July 17 will be highlighted by the annual goat show at 1:30 p.m. There will be no gate admission Wednesday and carnival armbands will only be $13. Armbands will be $16 on Tuesday and $20 Thursday-Saturday. Gate fees will be $2 Monday, Tuesday and Thursday and $5 Friday and Saturday.

Mississippi Delta Shows will again be providing the carnival rides which will include a new and improved ferris wheel with a large light show.

“We’re excited about the new ferris wheel,” Calhoun Extension Agent Trent Barnett said. “It will be a great addition to the fair.”

Thursday events will include a 4-H crock pot supper, biscuit making contest, the annual pet show, a pony pull and a chicken scramble.

Trent Barnett, Calhoun Extension Agent, said pigs have become harder to come by for the scramble so the Fair Board decided to use chickens this year.

Friday, July 19 will be the opening night of the PCA Rodeo featuring cowboys from all over the country competing. The rodeo will begin at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Saturday’s events will include a Round Robin Roping at 9 a.m. and a Big Buck Contest in the multi purpose building.

Barnett said any mounted buck can be entered. Scoring will be done by MDWFP officials.
