Calhoun County continues to have one of the lowest unemployment rates in Mississippi

Calhoun County’s unemployment rate remains among the lowest in Mississippi and is also below the national rate according to the latest data from the Mississippi Department of Employment Security.


Calhoun County recorded an unemployment rate of 8.6% in April. The county’s rate was 10% in April of 2010 and 11.1% in April of 2009.

The lowest unemployment rates in the state for April are:
1. Rankin 6.3
2. Madison 7.1
3. Lafayette 7.4
4. Lamar 7.9
5. Jones 8.2
6. Scott 8.3
7. DeSoto 8.5
8. Neshoba 8.5
9. Calhoun 8.6
10. Harrison 8.9

Among the surrounding counties, only Lafayette’s 7.4%, third lowest in the state, is less than Calhoun County. Pontotoc recorded a 9.9, Grenada 10.5, Yalobusha 10.6, Chickasaw 12.0 and Webster 12.6.
The overall rate for Mississippi in April was 10%. The national unemployment rate for April was 8.7%.
