Calhoun City Wildcats win region championship; Lady Wildcats finish second

Lavarious Varnado converted a layup in the closing seconds to lift Calhoun City to a 71-69 overtime win over Potts Camp in the Region 2-2A Championship Friday night in Walnut.

The Wildcats, who finished third in the region in the regular season, marched through the tournament with wins over Strayhorn and Hickory Flat before Friday’s title game.

Austin Burl and Chakel Gates each scored 18 points for the Wildcats Friday night. Brieton Sykes added 12.

Varnado, Burl, and Andrekus Ezell were named to the all-tournament team. Chakel Gates was named tournament MVP.

The Wildcats will be at home Tuesday night against Coahoma AHS for the opening round of the North Half playoffs. A win would advance the Wildcats to the North Tournament at Baldwyn.

The Lady Wildcats were beaten by Potts Camp 81-56 in Friday night’s championship game.

V Farmer scored 19 and Canesia Hubbard 12 for the Lady Wildcats.

They will also be at home for the opening of the North Playoffs Monday night against Coahoma County. A win would advance the Lady Wildcats to the North Tournament at New Site.
