A Bruce man remains in stable condition in a Memphis hospital after an accidental shooting in Derma last Saturday night.
Fred Brand, of Bruce, suffered serious injuries to a hand and leg when he attempted to grab a shotgun from his half-brother LaTarus Sykes, 22, of Derma.
The two were at the Sykes’ residence on Underwood Drive in Derma around 11:30 p.m. when what Deputy Dewyane Winter described as a “gang fight” broke out in front of the home.
Winter said Sykes went into the home to retrieve the shotgun with the intention of firing it into the air to try and disperse the crowd in his front yard. He was met by Brand outside who tried to take the gun from Sykes when it went off.
Sykes and two of his college football teammates from Oklahoma – Ivor Bushel, 22, and Dwight Shaffer, 22 – were arrested and charged with public drunk.
Sykes was also charged with discharging a firearm in the city limits. All have been released on bond.
Brand was airlifted to Memphis where it was reported he lost a portion of his hand due to the injury.
Deputy Winter said the investigation is ongoing and further charges are pending.
