Bruce racked up more than 500 yards of total offense as six different Trojans recorded touchdowns in a 49-13 win at Walnut last Friday.
The Trojans improved to 6-1 on the season and 1-0 in region play with the win.
“It feels good,” Junior RB Zay Armstrong said of the 6-1 start. “We’ve worked hard in practice, giving it all we’ve got. We’re leaving it all on the field.”
A 34-yard run by Armstrong and a 35 yard pass from Davis Brown to Shaq Bush set up the first score of the game. Girraud Mingo, who starts on the offensive and defensive lines, lined up in the backfield and took the hand off, powering through the left side of the line for the 2-yard touchdown run.
“That touchdown felt good,” Mingo said. “My first time.”
The Bruce defense trojans_walnut03stuffed Walnut on a fourth and one attempt at midfield a few minutes later. It only took the Trojans one play to get back to the end zone. Brown, who finished 9-16 passing for 224 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions, hit Shaq Bush with a 49 yard scoring strike. Bush added the extra point for a 14-0 lead.
Walnut’s next possession only lasted one play as Zay Armstrong picked off a pass over the middle to set the Trojans up in good field position.
“Coach (Ryan) Keeton has been working with me on reading the wide receiver and he showed me the route,” Armstrong said. “I just did what my coach taught me to do and picked it off.”
Donta Armstrong quickly turned the turnover into points with a 20-yard scoring run on the next play.
Walnut added a touchdown on the final play of the half after an interception. Bruce led at the break 21-6.
The Trojans opened the second half with a four-play scoring drive. Zay Armstrong started it with a 64 yard run. Brown got free for a 20 yard gain. After a run by Demetris Evans, Ted Esom capped the drive with a 5-yard touchdown run.
Bruce would later add a 27-yard touchdown pass from Brown to Bush, a 1-yard TD run by Ben Williams, and a 2-yard touchdown run by Zack Cruthirds.
Esom led the strong defensive effort with nine tackles. Jonathan Bobo and Wiley Maddox each had six. Deshawn Tillman and Terrance Jones each recorded sacks. Cruthirds and Jamar Brown both had fumble recoveries.
“I thought we executed well in spots and in others we didn’t,” Bruce Coach James Ray said. “We’ve got to become a more consistent team and we’ll be fine.”
The Trojans welcome Hatley this Friday for Homecoming. A homecoming pep rally will be held Thursday night at 6 p.m. on the Square. Festivities at the football field will begin at 6:30 p.m. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
