Familiar Favorites, New Events Highlight 19th Sawmill Festival

The 19th edition of the Bruce Sawmill Festival will begin Friday, July 9 with all the familiar favorites –?golf tournament, arts and crafts, Fine Arts Club ice cream, lots of music, games and rides for kids. This year’s festival will also see the return of some past favorites, such as the Rotary Fish Fry on Friday night and a 5K run.

I Give Up On Trying To Cut Jack’s Nails

It’s one of the biggest dramas at our house – nail cutting time. I don’t mean mine, but our three dogs. The only thing I’ve seen run faster than our dogs at nail-cutting time is the occasional stray cat that suddenly realizes he’s stepped into the wrong yard.

Ruby Logan

Ruby Lee Nix Logan, 79, of Bruce, died Thursday, June 24, 2010 at BMH-NM in Oxford. She was born  May 7, 1931 in Calhoun County, the daughter of Bryan Nix, Sr. and Lilly B. Nix. She was retired as a cashier at  Mt. Moriah Grocery, and was a member of Mt. Comfort Baptist Church.

Billy Barton Jr.

Billy Ralph Barton Jr., 49, passed away Wed. June 23, 2010 at Methodist University Hospital in Memphis. Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Sat., June 26, 2010 at the Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Brandon with interment in the Floral Hills Memory Gardens in Pearl. Mr. Barton was born in Memphis and lived most of his life in the Brandon area, where he was a member of Crossview Baptist Church. He was an employee of the Mississippi Department of Transportation for 11 years and he also loved motorcycles. He loved spending time with his family and friends, especially his daughter making sure he attended all of her functions.

“I knew how to cook nothing except spaghetti when I got married,” said Leigh McDowell Moore of Bruce. “I was so nervous about the cooking thing and knew I had to do something to learn. I had always watched, but never tried,” she said.
