MHSAA Needs A Significant Overhaul

Monday’s court ruling denying the Bruce Trojan baseball team their deserved opportunity to play for a state title was extremely disappointing to put it mildly, but it paled in comparison to my disappointment with the lack of due process and the continued skewed priorities of the Mississippi High School Activities Association.

Del Hemphill

Delbert Lee “Del” Hemphill, 73, of Slate Springs, died Thursday at Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo. He was born April 27, 1947 in Lewiston, Id. He was a retired Captain (0-6) in the U.S. Coast Guard and served during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He was the mayor of Slate Springs, and was a member of the Grand Lodge, McKee Lodge in Slate Springs, American Legion, and the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA).

Wendell Rose

Wendell Rose, 71, of Oxford, died Wednesday, May 19, 2010 at MS State Veterans Home in Oxford. He was born July 22, 1938 in Dallas, Tx., the son of Leslie and Mary Ross Rose. He served in the U.S. Air Force and was a graduate of Memphis State after two years. He was a member of Collierville Baptist Church and was a retired engineer with Buckman Laboratories in Memphis.

Opal Allday

Edna Opal Allday, 89, of Hebron, In., and formerly of Calhoun City, died Sunday, May 16, 2010 at Golden Living Center in Valparaiso, In. She was born May 4, 1921 in Slate Springs, the daughter of Rev. Elbert and Clara West Lunceford. She was a retired school teacher and member of Bethany Baptist Church in Slate Springs.

Kenneth Liles

Kenneth Wayne Liles, Jr., 27, of Bruce, died Tuesday, May 18, 2010 at BMH-NM in Oxford. He was born February 23, 1983 in Oxford.

Slate Springs Mayor Del Hemphill Had Big Impact On Small Town

Del Hemphill, who served Slate Springs as mayor for more than 13 years, died last week of cancer. Funeral services were held last Saturday at Pryor Funeral Home in Calhoun City.

Rescued BES Squirrels Nurtured And Released

Two baby squirrels were rescued at Bruce Elementary School on March 30. The babies were in danger of harm due to their age and lack of fear.

School Board Told More African-American Teachers Needed

Bruce Baseball Due In Hinds Chancery Court This Morning (Monday)

Bruce Trojan players and parents have filed a motion in the chancery court of Hinds County to get their Class 2A North State baseball championship reinstated and allow the Trojans to play for a state title. Friday afternoon, the Calhoun County School Board offered their unanimous support.
